Chicago and the Chicago political scene have long been said to be the playground of an assortment of unsavory politicians, corrupt and crooked public officials, shady hustlers and Mafioso old school gangsters (e.g. Sam Giancana, Al Capone, Bugs Moran) and their modern day prodigy (crews that go by names like Latin Kings, Vice Lords and Gangster Disciples). However, the recent comments whispered by aging Civil rights leader and longtime activist Rev. Jesse Jackson into an open microphone, to another guest on a Fox network program, to castrate presidential hopeful Barack Obama was the epitome of Windy City gangsterism.

At my favorite newsstands, the comments were the same. "This must be some issue, people are calling and asking if it's in. We're being asked to reserve multiple copies, which never happens!" they said. "Wow!" I thought. Highly anticipated seemed to be putting it mildly. "I've never seen anything like it", is what I'm told for any magazine, especially an expensive import.

A simple but profound message and one that needs to come at young people in all kinds of ways before they even think of dropping out of school or becoming a teen mother. That's why parents of at-risk teens, perhaps discouraged by the dismally high youth unemployment rate this summer, should take heed of a new paperback that should be a must-read on their summer reading list.

Online music service Last.fm today announced that it will start paying out royalties to unsigned and independent bands that upload their music to last.fm. Artists will earn royalties whenever their music is played on-demand, or on Last.fm's streaming radio service. Last.fm had first announced this in January, but it took until today for Last.fm to officially start up its Artist Royalty Program.

Last week I saw on iGoogle (probably in the TechDirt feed) that 1938 Media had inked a deal with Verizon Wireless to distribute 1938 Media content on its VCast service. I didn’t get to read it because it was a busy day. 1938 Media was no stranger to me, however, after all the controversy that his TechNi***: Where are the Black Tech Bloggers? video caused on the Videoblogging Yahoogroup a year ago. (Google it). So then Monday I see in my email from the Electronic Urban Report that Najee Ali, Paul Porter and other activists were calling for Verizon Wireless to withdraw the distribution deal. I thought that interesting that this was in the Electronic Urban Report and also since the infamous video was about a year old. I wondered if the boycott would work. Apparently it did because the next day the Electronic Urban Report was reporting that Verizon dropped 1938 Media from the VCast service.

After flipping through the popular Mexican comic book, one word came to mind – racist.

I was like WHAT? Amel knows people love her that much so I am so glad she decided to take this jump.

Free-thinker, 35 year old single Dad of 3 amazing daughters. I'm a news/sports junkie who also enjoys keeping up with pop culture. CNN & ESPN are my favorite channels but the internet is my true joy. I love technology and diversity; which the internet marries well. However, what’s most shaped me and my perspective is my 20 year battle with HIV and depression and one or two consequent addictions & compulsions. I’ve gone toe-to-toe with them since I was a teenager and now I finally feel like I’m on this side of healing. I hope reading and visiting my blog allows you to identify with one or all of those aspects of my life. Welcome to my world.
