This month, two African American artists with Portland connections have died - Robert Colescott on June 4 from Parkinsonian syndrome and Philemon Reid on June 9 from pancreatic cancer. Bob Hicks has written a sweet tribute to Reid on Art Scatter, and DK Row did some good reporting on Colescott's years in Portland in a provocative take a couple of days ago.

Riché Richardson, associate professor of Africana studies, returned Jan. 17 from a week in Paris as a cultural envoy to France sponsored by the U.S. Embassy. She gave a series of lectures in the city, where her art quilts depicting Barack Obama, Josephine Baker and Simone de Beauvoir were being exhibited.

Recent Criticism about my blog had me thinking - is Blogcatalog relevant?

When I first started blogging, I had placed information about my blog in many communities then I totally forgot where I put those place setters. I failed to realize that I placed my blog in a category of Visual Arts on Blogcatalog.

VOX has a feature where you can *tag* your posts to help you categorize certain blog posts.

Initially when I first started blogging my emphasis was on the Visual Arts but then my interests are varied and I never wanted to categorize all of what I share on my blog. There is much I enjoy sharing on my blog and it is not necessarily the visual arts but I have been waiting to learn about exhibits on African American art around the world. When I do read something about an exhibit I do share it but otherwise I know that is one section that I have not cultivated as much as I had plan on doing.

But maybe I need to take my blog out of that category of visual arts on blogcatalog? I don't know but I only put my blog there in the beginning because of the posts that I make from time to time on art especially that of the African Diaspora.

My blog is more of observations of what I experience online. There is not a true direction of what I plan on sharing. The only blogs that I have limited to a certain category are my music blogs which are on last.fm and on mog.com whereas this blog is more of a classroom to me of a variety of things that I am into.

Something for me to consider and think about as I continue to blog. Maybe I need certain blinders on this blog to keep it more topic related?! I don't know but I tried to use this blog more as a diary of my actions online.

I appreciate that constructive criticism. Made me think of the purpose of what this blog is about. Makes me think more too of why I am blogging at times. Twitter was my true way of communication but now that is gone what is my blog going to be focused on?! The same random things that I am always into. I honestly never have been able to put labels on who I am or what my blog is about. It's hard. That is why I tell most people to check my TAGS!! Ugh : /

Hanging in Robert Johnson's den at home is an oil from the 1930s by an African-American artist named Palmer Hayden. The painting depicts a black American businessman getting his shoes shined. The subject is nattily dressed in suit and spats, a little like Johnson himself, who is sporting a crisply pressed blue shirt and a shiny yellow tie. "That painting represents pride and dignity," says Johnson. "I identify personally with this work," he adds. "It represents my culture, my history."

Art Historian David Driskell is an authority of African American art. My Mom had the pleasure of taking art classes with him at Talladega College in the 1950s. I've known David Driskell all my life and his influence on my Mom on art is why I am the art fanatic that I am. His work and books are essential to any collection of African American art. Please take some time and watch this youtube video where he makes a lecture.

David Driskell was commissioned by my mother to do an original art work piece for me when I graduated from college that I cherish tremendously. It is something I will not share online but one day I am going to loan it to an institution for others to see! 8) Some things I gotta keep to myself!

SEATTLE.- The Qwest Foundation today announced its support of the Northwest African American Museum (NAAM) with a $20,000 contribution. The grant will be used to support NAAMs mission of connecting students with the traditions and innovations in art, education, history and culture of African-Americans in the Pacific Northwest through the Educational Traveling Trunks Program. The trunks will be made available to educators as a component to their visits to the museum and will contain grade-appropriate curriculum guides and lesson plans complete with photographs and activities. In just the short time that the Northwest African American Museum has been open, it has already established itself as an exceptional gift to the community, said Kirk Nelson, Qwest president for Washington. Qwest is honored to support the museums educational efforts as it works to introduce students to the rich history, art and culture of African-Americans in the Pacific Northwest. Three trunks will be geared toward third- through fifth-grade students; three toward sixth- through eighth-grade students; and four toward ninth- through 12th-grade students. Thanks to the support of the Qwest Foundation, we will be able to invest in the people of our community by giving students the exciting opportunity to learn through the exploration of objects and documents," said Barbara Earl Thomas, Northwest African American Museum acting director. "These educational trunks will be wonderful ways to help promote cultural awareness and ownership among African American youth." The Qwest Foundation will present the $20,000 check to museum staff today at 11:30 a.m.

Over a career that has spanned more than three decades, Martin Puryear has gained international acclaim as a sculptor. Now the National Gallery of Art, in his hometown of Washington, D.C., is paying tribute to the artist with a major retrospective. VOA's Susan Logue reports.Puryear's sculptures Mus (foreground) and Old Mole suggest the familiar although they are abstract Hand-crafted from wood, wire, rawhide and tar, many of Martin Puryear's sculptures look like they might be tools, but it isn't quite clear how they would be used. Others are reminiscent of animals, boats or primitive shelters."He has always made objects that look like they should have a name, but we can't name them. They seem like something we know, but not really," says Ruth Fine, National Gallery of Art curator of special projects in modern art.
