As a young African American growing up in America during 1984 to 1992, my TV life surrounded primarily around The Cosby Show, A Different World and a few other shows. The one show that truly impacted my life and many lives
of an entire generation was The Cosby Show.
Despite what all the critics want to say about what is going on in the current state of black America, many of us escaped these negative statistics for we had a community that embraced us or we made a community for ourselves. With the positive images such as The Cosby Show and A Different World that were in constant rotation during prime time hours, it made many African Americans feel as though we had community and that we were loved.
With this self love, The Cosby Show and A Different World, inspired many young people to complete their
education by going to college and even to graduate school. All of my friends are college graduates and
are employed. Maybe this may be rare to what you hear in the news at large but there are many of us
who are educated but you never hear these success stories.
Right here on Vox there are wonderful stories being told not only by African Americans, but internationally I am finding
a generation on here who is opened minded and wants to contribute to the world in some way. All of these individuals
here are escaping the negativity that you hear in the mainstream media.
Thank you, Mr. Bill Cobsy, for reinforcing the positive images during my pre-teen and teenage years
for it truly made an impact on my life. Seeing young people like myself in a family setting helped me
realize that anyone could attain the American dream if they had pride in themselves and in their community.
