Barack Obama's Reality is WONDERFUL

This is surreal for the USA and for me. I am so happy that I am crying for joy!

God is a good GOD.

Congratulations, Sen. Barack Obama in becoming the Democratic Nominee for President of the USA. I did not find out until early this morning but I had nothing to read or listen to for I was without access to the internet or tv until this afternoon. (I was on the auto train) Now, I am without electricity (thank you to my neighbor's wi fi for connecting me for sharing my happiness!)

The Change Began with the Kennedy Family

My heart goes out to Sen. Ted Kennedy's family.

When I heard of Sen. Kennedy's recent health scare it made my heart drop.

Why?

There is a personal connection to Sen. Kennedy that I have kept secret for years that I have to share here. I kept this a secret for my mother is a private individual who does not like to ask for much or bring attention to herself. This time I have to make it public.

In 1965 when my mother graduated from Howard University's Law School,
she worked in Sen. Kennedy's office on Capitol Hill. How rare do you think that was for an African American woman during the height of racial tensions in the USA to work in a coveted position on Capitol Hill? Well, that was my Mom and a rare opportunity. Would you say this was affirmative action back then? My Mom was #3 in her law school class and her professor Patrica Roberts Harris recommended the position for her.

My mother did not stay long working for Sen. Kennedy but he was the one who shared with my Mom her passing bar results from the Florida bar exam. He called her into her office and told her that he was proud of her that she had passed the Florida bar. My mother found out her results from Sen. Kennedy first for my grandmother received notice before my mother did for the bar results were mailed to my grandmother in Florida and not to my mother who was living in Washington, DC at the time.

My mother did not have an opportunity to have a decent paying job in the state of Florida for she was informed that despite having a law degree that the highest job that she could get would be a social worker!

My mother is one of the first few African American women in the 1960s to receive her license to practice law. [Her name at the time was Ruby Burrows] She was unable to sit for a bar exam review course because at that time bar review courses were not available to her so she had to take a correspondence course where she had to send in her homework for someone to check it as opposed to going to a class. Despite not having one on one interaction with others, my Mom passed the bar exam on her first try! The Florida bar exam is considered a challenging bar exam for it is not easy.

The role my mother played in Sen. Kennedy's office was dealing with migrant farmer's legal issues. However, some people in Sen. Kennedy's office did not know what to make of my mother. A black woman working as a lawyer on Capitol Hill in the 1960s was rare and she was not a secretary or an assistant or even a cleaning position but a lawyer.

This past weekend my mother was sharing with me that she was going to write a letter to Sen. Kennedy but I am not to sure how quickly she will get to it. So, this is an open letter to his family thanking him for all he did in opening doors of opportunity for her and many others.

Sen. Ted Kennedy is a blessing and though I have seen him in passing even when I was working on the Hill, I wanted to say hello although I honestly did not know what to say to him. I was not to sure if he would remember my mother either so that is why I kept a background presence even when I was on the Hill.

We appreciated you, Sen. Kennedy!

Also, thank you to Sen. Barack Obama, for filling in for Sen. Kennedy as speaker at Wesleyan University's commencement on Sunday. (Source here: ABC News Blog) Sen. Obama your speech was timely for we all want change and that is what Sen. Kennedy craves for our country to as his niece Caroline Kennedy said in her endorsement of Barack Obama here in New York Times article: A President Like my Father.

My prayers will continue always for the Kennedy family and for our country. I see a change coming, do you want to be a part of it? Please consider registering to vote and vote!

Some people cannot understand why the depiction of Obama as a monkey is hurtful.

It's a historical stereotype of African American culture that is unacceptable and some people will NEVER understand for some of these insensitive individuals do not feel the rage of emotions of hurt when you see this image dangled in front of your eyes to represent your community.
