Nelson Mandela artworks are 'fakes', London gallery told | World news | guardian.co.uk

The former South African president said he "strongly disassociates himself" from the show, Nelson Mandela at 91, due to open tomorrow at the Belgravia Gallery. Lawyers for Mandela, who celebrates his birthday on Saturday, said they had written to the gallery asking it to "desist immediately" but received no reply.

This month, two African American artists with Portland connections have died - Robert Colescott on June 4 from Parkinsonian syndrome and Philemon Reid on June 9 from pancreatic cancer. Bob Hicks has written a sweet tribute to Reid on Art Scatter, and DK Row did some good reporting on Colescott's years in Portland in a provocative take a couple of days ago.

Thank you to my friend @chimera223 on twitter for letting me know about the fair. At first I was not to sure if I was going to go, but I love art so I did.

The one artist who made me stop dead in my tracks was nya' ! (please read his bio here: s e e d gallery - AAF)

In all my years of going to art shows and being with my mother who loves art, he had a piece that spoke to me and I mean truly spoke to me.

"Language of Destiny" - I was FROZEN. Literally FROZEN when I saw the piece.

It had the images of a violin that is subtle. It also has an image of musical notes and even an image of sheet music. If you are a musician and you see this piece you will have an instant connection to it. With the colors you feel the sunrise and sunset. That is how I felt when I was looking at it. I stared at it for a good 2 hours.

The second instrument I learned to play was the violin so that is why I was so drawn to the painting. Though I have not played the violin since I was a kid, I still have a strong affinity to the images of violin and to all music created by violins. It is angelic to me.

Every painting that nya' creates has a story to it. The one that stopped me in my tracks was known as the "Language of Destiny." And, to me the language was the music.

The last day of the Affordable Art Exhibit is tomorrow so if you are in New York City please come out!

*By the way on Friday, I did have an incident with one of the art sellers who did not acknowledge my presence when they saw me looking at their work on their display in their booth no "hi" or "how are you doing". I felt very insulted. I was going to buy something but with that attitude I said forget it. I felt that they probably felt I was inferior to them with their smug attitude. I pray for you and your acidic attitude.*

God is GOOD! A kind soul on flickr had some pictures from the Benin Art exhibit at The British Museum that I wanted to see SO bad but the exhibit when I went in September 2007 was closed indefinitely (as I was told) due to staff shortage. I feel as though God whispered in my ear today to find these pictures and my wish was answered! I am overjoyed! Thank you thank you!

"Eternal Ancestors: The Art of the Central African Reliquary" at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

After reading Holland Cotter's review of the exhibit in the New York times, I definitely will get off my lazy butt and will see this exhibit. For awhile, I have been really surprised not to find any other exhibits on African Art at the MET. There are permanent installations but I have exhausted them all. So, this is definitely refreshing to see, "Eternal Ancestors."

Hmm...I think I need to re-read Flash of the Spirit by Robert Farris Thompson where there is a discussion of African Art, African philosophy and African rituals. It scared the mess out of me when I read it in my Philosophy classes in college but it was extremely informative. So, I think it is time to re-visit the book soon!
