Here I am, face to face with one of the most incisive technology journalists of today - via his blog BuzzMachine - and he is asking me what I think of the internet. I find the idea mind-boggling, to say the least; it would have been unthinkable a decade ago, when Google was a fledgling search engine and the internet a mystery to most of us.

Henry Louis Gates Jr., known as “Skip,” is a professor at Harvard University, where he is also the director of the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research. A prolific writer, editor, and film producer, he has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation “Genius Grant,” a National Humanities Medal, and nearly fifty honorary degrees from institutes for higher education. A seasonal resident of the Vineyard for the past twenty-seven years, he spoke with Martha’s Vineyard Magazine writer Laura Roosevelt by phone from off-Island in June.

A leader of the New Democrat movement, Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh is sometimes described as a "Republicrat." He's established himself as a centrist who seeks common ground with Republicans. In '98, after two terms as the state's governor and one term as secretary of state, he won the U.S. Senate seat once held by his father. Bayh was on the list of possible running mates with Gore in '00 and Kerry in '04 and, after forming an exploratory committee, surprised many by announcing that he would not run for president this year.

For the past twenty years, Dave Davies has reported on government and politics in Philadelphia. He's currently senior writer for the Philadelphia Daily News, as well as a stand-in host for the public radio show, Fresh Air, and WHYY's Radio Times with Marty Moss-Coane. Davies previously worked as KYW News Radio's city hall bureau chief and as city hall correspondent for WHYYFM. He's also a founding editor of the weekly newspaper, Community Focus. A Texas native, Davies graduated from the University of Texas.

Michael Nutter was elected mayor of Philadelphia in an historic landslide last November. He previously served on the city council and as Democratic leader of the 52nd Ward. Prior to going into public service, Nutter worked as an investment manager at one of the nation's leading minority-owned investment banking and brokerage firms. In '01, he was appointed to the Board of City Trusts, which manages the city's charitable assets. The lifetime Philadelphian is a graduate of the Wharton School of Business.

James Baldwin 20th Anniversary Commemoration: Remembering the Work of the Legendary Writer and Civil Rights Activist

James Baldwin's book, Go Tell it on the Mountain, changed my views on religion in many respects. I read it as a 13 year old church going young lady who was taught to always make God the center of my universe. However, I was having issues with the black church for I was witnessing a lot of deceptiveness by members of the church and even the minister. Go Tell it on the Mountain taught me the questioning of the church was normal and that you have to keep a spiritual awakening within yourself despite the hypocritical environment of the church.
